OBDII diagnostics troubleshooting

Post by RedShark »

Dear all,

Would like to share with you my little knowledge as requested by Bulldozer, I'm sure most of you knows it already.

Most of cars if not all since 1996 came with diagnostics port as standard from factory
And it's called OBDII or OBD2

http://www.ebay.com/itm/301929178781

What I did simply was ordering Bluetooth/wifi OBD2 dongle which allows me to connect from Android/Mac OS to the car Computer

Once you have connection to car you can get lot of info like engine, tranny and intake temp

As well as any fault codes u have in the car

For example, we where on a drive and engine check light came on

By reading code I got to know it was throttle actuator issue ,cleaned it nicely and made sure all connections are tight then cleared the codes and that was it

Without Knowing why check engine light was on ,we could have send a car back to road instead

Along with the Dongle u will need an App from Android/mac app store ,many of them are free and good ones like torque pro which I use costs like 20 AED

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... owl.torque

If you like me having the Monterra with Android OS ,you can install the app on the Garmin and keep monitoring temperatures or whatever u need while driving and once u got a code you can simply read/reset it from the garmin as well

This works on many cars not only jeep BTW

Hope this is useful for you guys

Thanks for reading

Hey, I bought one on Souq.com a while ago but it's not working on my TJ (06) some of the pins in that odb reader are not connected to the board and they correspond to the ones used by the TJ's ECU. It works perfectly on other cars, just not on an old TJ !

Do you know if this one would work on a TJ ?

Hi ,

Not sure actually, never tried it on TJ
I would do small research online on which protocol the TJ is using for OBD2 and order a dongle that supports it

If u look online you can find dongles for 300$ plus

I only tried the cheap one and it's working fine so far

The TJ does use ODB2 and those dongles supposedly support all OBD2 protocols but they actually dont (there are like 15 different OBD2 languages varying from manufacturer). 2006 Jeep used sthg like ISO 15765-XXX and for it to work you need the pins 6 & 14 on the dongle to be connected -which they aren't on mine-.

ANYWAY, if you get a chance to test it on a TJ on one of the trips I would love to know if it works so I can get one for myself.

(and It's not a problem on the ECU side either because I tried the code reader from Ramy dubai and it worked fine.)

Hi Redshark,

I looked at the link you provided for the Bluetooth/wifi code reader. With Bluetooth selected the price was $4.51 which showed only for android/PC connection. Then, because I have iPhone not android, I tried the wifi version and the price jumped to $21.51.

Which version have you tried? Android Bluetooth? Or Wifi version for iPhone? Any one tried the wifi version, does it work as advertised?

At $4.00 I was willing to try anything, but at $21.00 plus shipping I am hoping for some feed back from someone before I give it a try....

Best regards,

Randy
