JEEP WRANGLER 95 - RIMS and TIRES

Post by Ahmed »

Hi All !

If anybody is interested or knows of somebody interested in selling their Rims and Tires that would fit a 1995 Jeep Wrangler i would like to know.
I have purchased an old Wrangler which has stock tires and rims. Rims are old style plus the tires are also old. I don't want to go with real big and expensive but something reasonable or even slight used ones.

Any help will be appreciated -- will also look into doing some slight modifications so if you have your old stuff and would like either sell or get rid of please let me know.

Thanks
Ahmed (050)-614-1696

Adiga,

I will call and speak with you on tires !

Since the vehicle was parked for sometime i wanted to have it checked out completely --- AL JALLAF when i called and tried to make an appointment based on the car details the Service Advisor recommended that why am i wasting money getting it checked out here since its an old model and for sure the estimate the provide will be worth more that the car price.

Any suggestion where i should have atleast the major things in the car checked out !!!
Al JALLAF quoted Dhs 700/- for a complete check-up ........

31's on ur stock rims will rub on the YJ.
8 inch wide offset rims will help with 31's ,suggest u invest in a 2" lift.
lift in shj = 350-550 dhs.
new shocks & steering damper according to budget ( roughly 1300 for a new set)
4 15 x 8" rims = 800 - 1000 dhs ( u want 31's , u get offset rims)
4 yoko geo a/t's at 330 a piece = 1330 ( 10dhs tip  )

Yj's are simple , check it yourself & save 700dhs.
once u start taking an 11 year old car to the dealer , you're going to be very poor , very quick.
Get a Haynes Manual , do the checks in there. u need parts , buy them yourself , i usually get a really good discount on all parts i need. For difficult things like differential rebuilds (used diff's in shj approx 500-600dhs, its better to let them do stuff like that...but paying 700 for them to CHECK it is like shooting yourself in the foot...(i.e. pretty stupid in my opinion)

YJ checklist & usual damage based on mine & a friends.
A/C drips into the passenger side footwell.
-pull the carpets back off the firewall , check driver's side for rust or missing paint from possible leaking clutch master cylinder..that stuff peels the paint right off.
-check between door hinges & firewall - guarantee you'll find rust.
-when u have your seats re-upholstered , check around the mounting holes of the seats.metal could be sheered & needs welding & painting ( in the tub )
-check driveshaft & propshaft CV- for wear & play.
-bushings usually need replacement.
-check fuel line for cracks & fuel line mounts to see if they're brittle.(hence the need of a fire extinguisher).
-rear diff's are prone to damage.listen for loud whining noise...(that means your diff is fudged)
-turn steering wheel , 1st gear , accelerate..clunk clunk = spider gears are fudged.
-4wheel drive vacuum tubes ( that suck ) could be brittle & not build up enough vacuum & could fail on u in the desert. (replaced mine with posi-lok system - see quadratec..best investment i made after getting stuck at 2a.m. , alone with my 4wheel drive refusing to work..saves u 2-3 hours of digging..piece of  )
-clutch could be on it's way out..check for slipping..you'll feel it...
-radiator usually $hits itself after that long , so best check for rust particles..this is easiest done when u drain your radiator to fit a 160 F thermostat ,
-check the thermostat housing for wear ( replaced mine .no pressure build up = overheating ) replaced the housing did magic for my car.flushed the cooling system in the motorblock while i was at it..but that gets messy & u need to keep the thermostat housing off when u do it.
i tried doing a reverse flush of the block ( stick the hose in the bottom hose , removes all the old stuff in there...but u need a rubber bung to fit the water hose into the radiator hose to build up enough pressure to flush the system properly )
-check front & rear diff seals , transfercase seals , petrol tank cover seals , oil filler cap seal ,etc.
-change the oil in your diffs & transfercase while you're at it.
-check fluids , possibly replace rubber hoses , fan belt ( keep old ones as spares )
-check windshield frame for rust & if the seals let water in.if they do , you'll have rust soon ( that would be a bad thing  )

-congrats on the YJ , its an animal in the desert .
dont be afraid to work on it yourself. seroiusly , not much u can really break.its a very very very simple car.
in the event of a roll , keep hands in car , away from rollcage & try and count how many times it rolls .
gluck with that .
few other things that i forgot & too tired to think of now.
need any "advice" , lemme know.

Hello Kris,

Thanks for taking the time and responding to my query. Kris i don't have the Repair Manual however will try to order one quickly. What i would really like is if you have sometime when ever possible to just have a look at my Jeep and based on your experience i can do the required only things.

Whenever possible just let me know of date and time and i shall be there 1

Thanks and Regards

No worries Ahmed .
I'd love to have a look at ur Jeep for u , but im not back in Dubai til March 1st & i think by that time you'd probably want to have the car in top condition for the remainder of the cool season. If u can wait til after March 1st , ill prob drop by Abu Dhabi on short notice ( real short notice right Iguana? )

With that list i typed out of what to check , it's really very simple to check those things yourself...it all just sounds a bit abstract til you actually start doing the things yourself , then u get the hang of it & realise what a basic & simple car the YJ is.

If i were you, i'd check all seals (diff seals , transfercase seals) , change the fluids , def check for all the rust patches & cracked seat mounts , vacuum tubes & fuel line mountings ( coz it runs right over the exhaust ).

As for the tires , if i were you , your leaf springs are prob still the stock ones , u can have them reconditioned or even have the car lifted a bit , then get 31's on 8 inch offset rims. The YJ isnt like the TJ where u can fit 31's with no lift on stock rims...so i wouldnt invest in buying some stock tires and rims off anyone just yet...i'd wait and then get what u need instead of paying twice.
