The UAE Off-Road Season Is Back: What to Expect in 2026/27

After months of summer heat, the UAE desert season is finally around the corner.

For many of us, this is the time of year we have been waiting for. Early morning drives, cooler temperatures, long convoys, campfires, Liwa trips and weekends spent surrounded by dunes.

And this year, the UAE off-road calendar is looking particularly busy.

From Sweihan to Liwa and Al Ain, several major desert motorsport events are scheduled over the coming months, starting with the return of the Abu Dhabi Baja Challenge in October.

Abu Dhabi Baja Challenge Starts in Sweihan

The fourth season of the Abu Dhabi Baja Challenge will begin on 17 October 2026 at Tilal Sweihan.

Organised by Abu Dhabi Sports Council in cooperation with the Emirates Motorsports Organization, the championship consists of four desert rounds running from October 2026 until April 2027.

What makes the Baja Challenge interesting is that it is not limited to professional racers. The championship is also open to amateur competitors, giving less experienced drivers and riders an opportunity to compete in a properly organised desert racing environment.

Cars, buggies, motorcycles and quads will take part.

Each round covers more than 100 kilometres, with laps of approximately 25 kilometres.

After the opening round in Sweihan, the championship moves deeper into some very familiar off-road territory.

Abu Dhabi Baja Challenge 2026/27

• 12 to 13 December 2026: Liwa, Al Dhafra
• 23 January 2027: Liwa
• 10 April 2027: Al Ain desert

For UAE off-roaders, these are names that need little introduction.

Sweihan, Liwa and Al Ain contain some of the best desert terrain in the country, ranging from relatively manageable dunes to some very serious sand.

Dubai International Baja Returns in November

A few weeks after the Sweihan event, attention moves to Dubai.

The Dubai International Baja takes place from 5 to 8 November 2026.

The event forms part of both the FIA World Baja Cup and FIA Middle East Baja Cup and attracts international competitors alongside regional teams.

Unlike recreational dune driving, Baja racing is about maintaining speed over long distances while navigating difficult desert terrain.

It is a completely different level of driving, but anyone who regularly drives in the UAE desert will recognise many of the challenges involved.

Reading the terrain correctly, maintaining momentum, choosing the right line and understanding how the sand changes throughout the day are skills that matter whether you are racing or simply enjoying a weekend drive.

The difference is that the professionals are doing it much faster.

Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge

Then comes one of the biggest events on the UAE off-road calendar.

The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge is scheduled for 22 to 27 November 2026.

First held in 1991, the event has developed into one of the world's best-known international cross-country rallies.

Much of the competition takes place in Al Dhafra and the vast dunes of the Empty Quarter.

Anyone who has driven deep into Liwa understands why this area has such a reputation.

The scale of the dunes is completely different.

Distances become harder to judge, bowls become larger, climbs become longer and small mistakes can quickly become serious recoveries.

Watching professional rally teams tackle this terrain is a reminder of just how demanding the UAE desert can be.

Then Liwa Takes Over

December brings another highlight of the UAE desert season.

The next Liwa International Festival runs from 11 December 2026 until 2 January 2027 in Al Dhafra.

Liwa has grown into much more than a motorsport event.

It combines motorsport, camping, Emirati heritage, entertainment and one of the largest gatherings of off-road enthusiasts in the region.

At the centre of it all is Tal Moreeb.

The previous festival attracted more than 700,000 visitors, while participation in its motorsport competitions increased significantly.

For anyone interested in 4x4s, modified vehicles, UTVs, desert racing or simply spending time in Liwa during winter, it has become one of the major dates on the UAE calendar.

But the Start of the Season Means Something Else for Most of Us

Most UAE off-roaders are not preparing for a Baja race.

We are preparing for Friday and Saturday mornings in the desert.

As temperatures begin dropping, hundreds of 4x4s will once again head towards places such as Sweihan, Al Khatim, Al Ain and Liwa.

For experienced drivers, it feels like returning home.

For newcomers, this may be their first proper desert season.

And that makes the beginning of the season a good time to remember something important.

The desert is fun, but it deserves respect.

Before your first trip back into the dunes, check your vehicle properly.

Tyres that survived months of highway driving may not be in the same condition they were last winter. Batteries have spent another UAE summer under extreme heat. Cooling systems, belts, hoses and fluids all deserve attention.

Recovery equipment also needs checking.

Make sure your kinetic rope, soft shackles, compressor, tyre gauge, shovel, recovery boards, radio and other equipment are ready before you actually need them.

Most importantly, avoid driving into unfamiliar desert terrain alone.

A New Season, The Same Responsibility

One of the best things about off-roading in the UAE is the community around it.

People from completely different backgrounds meet in the desert with one thing in common: a love of adventure.

But as the number of people entering the desert increases each winter, responsible off-roading becomes even more important.

Drive within your ability.

Keep a safe distance.

Listen to the convoy marshal.

Use proper recovery points.

Do not leave rubbish behind.

Respect wildlife, farms, camps and restricted areas.

And if you are new to desert driving, learn with experienced people before trying to tackle difficult terrain on your own.

There will always be another dune.

From the Abu Dhabi Baja Challenge in Sweihan to the massive dunes of Liwa, the next few months are going to be busy for the UAE off-road community.

The professional racers will soon be preparing their machines for competition.

For the rest of us, it is time to check the 4x4, inspect the recovery gear, charge the radio and start watching the weather.

The desert season is almost here.
