Dyno Testing
Hi All,
I am considering putting a snorkel on my FJ and I have heard from quite a few people that there is a risk of power loss (I have also heard directly from a company in Australia that they got a power increase when they put on a snorkel).
If it is not too expensive, I thought I would do a 'before' and 'after' dyno test.
Can anyone tell me where I can get this done and roughly how much it costs?
Cheers, Al

Re: Dyno Testing
Quoting some online articles I had read. There will be some effect to fresh air flow as it would be with longer cycle with the snorkel on and if the inner surface is not smooth would also cuse unperfect air flow. However, the effect in either ways is not major effect to the car horsepower. Also the positive sides are cleaner colder air and almost sand free air filter.
I do recommend the snorkel option and it would be interesting to see the results of the dyno test

Al,
I wont go through technicalities.
I had a Safari snorkel on my FJ and I noticed the below:
1. No loss of power (the horsepower you ll lose is unnoticeable trust me)
2. I had to clean the air filter box every 3 months and I barely found sand in it
Go for it!

Re: Dyno Testing
so fare all cars with snorkel show less power on dyno doesn’t matter witch brand because an extended intake never improve flow of air
any corner make trouble for flow and create turbulence = resistant usual i see -15 to -24 hp on dyno up to car ....
if the inner fender liner properly fixed in Nissan or Toyota not much sand will come ...but any way the original filter boxes are designed to get sand inside and if is gcc spec filter element inside (no china copy)can handle sand with no issue if you stop the engine the sand will go down from filter in the filter box there are vents were the sand can go out i run my stock Toyota filter 1 10.000km and no issues with power drop and i never clean it this s worst thing what you can do ......
but if you plan to go under water there is no way around snorkel
Better invest in shawarma or sand tire ......

Hi Oliver, a slightly different question then, how about putting the TRD CAI onto the FJ, no snorkel just to the inner fender?

Re: Dyno Testing
Hi guys,
thanks for sharing your opinions. I was actually planning to do the same thing but now I will probably go for the CAI + pre-filter option. I never really liked the idea of drilling into my fender anyway.
Have fun!

Thanks Oliver for great information, i have a question, on an FJ is it better to have a TRD CAI or a bigger filter box. I saw some FJs replaced their filter boxes with Land cruiser's one claiming it will increase air flow magnificently!!
