** GPS RECEIVER **

Post by kareemamr »

Does anyone have any idea about the GPS reciever ??

Today i met this guy who has a gps reciever in in his Wrangler which is a small sized device like a lighter or something and he connects it to his imate and he showed me the functionality of it i was amazed everything is displayed on the mobile :) waypoint shortest route fastest etc.

He also had the Radars marked as point between Dubai -> Abu Dhabi ... to avoid getting caught overspeeding :)

It worked perfectly and it costed him 500 DHS

Does anyone got any Info about it ??

:)

Kareemamr,

check the following link:

http://www.tomtom.com

And more specifically this link:

http://www.tomtom.com/products/product. ... ry=2&Lid=1

check the product tour too

this is the site you are looking for. the receiver ( tracker ) sends signals via bluetooth to any phone device. The phone itself should be preloaded with a specific base map and real Map ( one CD sold ). Via the Blue tooth straeaming, your location is always shown on the pre loaded map into the phone...

:P

Thanks alot tamraz but it seems its a similar thing because TOMTOM doesnt have maps for the gulf area only europe and the states ... i wonder where to get those from.

I also found that garmin has this product for 119 USD but still trying to find the uae maps :S

but yes its the same concept ..

once again thanks alot , if u happen to find any maps related to uae let me know...

Hi,

Most probably its the Garmin USB receiver. I think its a bit slightly more than 500 (dunno but 3 month ago i have seen it around 700 in Radioshack, of course in the souk u can have a better deal :) )
It can be attached to laptop PDA etc, have a nice range of OS supported for the Gaminr applications, and they have nice maps covering Middle East as well.

Please check out if it is similar to this...

Hi Kareemamr,

Garmin Middle East City Navigator

from Kuwait to Oman, including Saudi, all cities and major roads included.
Pls don expect accuracy in Dubai: the pace they are changing the roads is killing the maps in 3-4 months.

I agree that the garmin software is the best available, even if it is a fair way behind in Dubai even with version 3. I have looked at a number of GPS installs in the wrangler, the problem is always space and security (soft top owner). The stand alone receivers are great for a PDA or PC based application and I was looking at going down the PC install route however, the more practical option, even if it is pricy, is the Garmin Trail Guide, basically a Garmin Quest GPS rebranded Jeep with a built in mount that provides power and speakers for the GPS. Good thing about the Quest is it has batteries so you can turn the engine off and not lose your data. The install is pretty neat, very simple and looks like it is factory fitted. Follow the link and look at the product images: http://www.garmin.com/products/trailguide/#

Thanks alot Dargunov .. it works only on pda's ??? i have a nokia communicator 9500 there was this software route66 coming with it and i deleted it :( i think it supported receiving signals from the bluetooth reciever.

If i have to replace my mobile as well then i should consider getting the Garmin GPS ....
