An employee of a bank was recently arrested in Abu Dhabi by the Criminal Investigation Department, in connection with a crime involving a stolen ATM card.

While he was performing a personal ATM transaction, the employee was approached by a stranger who requested assistance withdrawing funds because he claimed that he was unfamiliar with the procedure.

The employee was given the ATM card and PIN, and performed the withdrawal on behalf of the stranger. What the employee was not aware of was that the card and the PIN were stolen and the stranger was actually a fraudster. As a result, the security camera captured the image of the employee, and not that of the stranger.

While we should guard against fraudsters, people who genuinely require help should not be penalized.

You may assist with a withdrawal if approached for assistance. The guidelines are:

1. Assist with explaining the procedure, but DO NOT perform the transaction for the person.
2. DO NOT at any time, ask for the PIN or touch the card or the keyboard.
3. If you suspect that the card does not belong to the person, ask for a photo ID for verification (compare the name against the ATM card, and photograph against the person.)
4. In case of any discrepancies or issues, notify the security staff.

If you notice anyone acting suspiciously in a ATM lobby, notify the security staff.

Examples of suspicious activity are :
Loitering (Persons, who stay in the lobby or around the ATMs without having any business there.)
Shoulder Surfing (Attempting to look at PINs entered by customers)
Attempting to remove discarded ATM transaction receipts
