Beat the Heat Saturday - 25th May 2019 - Advanced

Attendees
Marshal : Thank you Tompa Bjorka for overseeing the trip.
Expert: Petro
Advanced: Billet, loefflmj1, Ramit
Slept in: The Baron, Mr. George

This was my first trip as a lead and I was excited and nervous as to how it would go.

We met at the Sweihan BBQ at 7:30 hoping to beat some of the heat of the sun. Everyone deflated and prepared the cars and then met for the briefing. I went through the template for briefings created by MegaMoe, and we discussed the essential things that should not be done while driving. Specifically don’t fight gravity or stop on an incline. We prepared the convoy order as follows:

Petro - Lead
Tompa-Bjorka - 2nd Lead
Ramit
Mark/ Ajeesh - Took turns sweeping

Following the briefing we headed out and started with a nice and easy track so that I could get the feel for leading. We headed to the farm edge with no issues and took a short break to see how the trip was going for everyone and I requested feedback. My turns at the beginning were tight and made it difficult for a truck to follow.

We took the gatch road a ways down to the south of the farm and headed out towards Nagara and I continued to try a nice and easy slow path that was at an Intermediate ++ to beginner advanced level. We had a stuck that was recovered well by myself with everyone assisting with guidance and setting up the recovery gear. We continued on and seemed to reach Nagara very quickly. After playing a little at Nagara we head back the south route through a tricky climb and we had some stucks and self recoveries but all did fine. I did a few side crests on some soft slopes and the truck ended up getting stuck and requiring a recovery again. I will need to be better aware of how the drivers in my convoy are doing as I wasn’t aware he was having trouble with the crests until he got stuck.

We decided to keep it a pretty easy track on the remaining portion and our track lead us right into a large pack of camels. Billet stopped to get some photos, and we had to wait at a few narrow points for the camels to clear before we proceeded.

The rest of the trip was an easy ride back to the BBQ point.

Everyone said they had a good time, and I enjoyed leading. My main struggles were reading the dunes in the midday sun, and leading a track that was good for the all the different vehicles in my group. I’m looking forwards to future chances to lead.

Thanks everyone who came for joining and I hope you all had a good time!

Thanks Kevin for arranging the drive, you did really well. This was your first lead but it seemed you have done quite a few already. So keep on arranging these drives [emoji106][emoji106].

Good Trip Kevin! Thanks for letting me sweep for you, I enjoyed that. Nice smooth track especially the first half. I would agree, this didn't seem like your first time. Well done and looking forward to more safe Petro-led trips. 4 FJs and a dodge, maybe we convinced someone to go Japanese.
