NAHEL MORNING ADVANCE DRIVE

Post by CANTALOUBE »

After a great day of GPS HUNT we set off to camp in the Nahel area for the next day's trip.
Everyone arrived at our bivouac point around 8:00 am

The team was composed of:

1 - Marshal John
2 - Marshal Thomas
3 - Marshal Kevan
4 - Ameen
5 - Bashar
6 - James
7 - Maher (Expert)
8 - Suryaveer
9 - Ziad
10 - Nanda

We decided with Marshal Thomas to split the group in two and to give the experts and some Advance the opportunity to take a lead.
I will let Thomas make his own report after this one.

My group:
1 - Marshal John
4 - Ameen
3 - Vaughan
9 - Ziad
5 - Marshal Kevan

So my group was composed of the most experienced Advance, I made a smooth start and we did some simple ridge crossings. We went east towards Nahel. There were many tracks but we were able to do some nice and technical ridge crossings.

At the end of the first part, Ziad took the lead for 30 minutes and then it was Vaughan's turn to take the lead to the return point.
It was a good place for them, the dunes are not very high but the passage of the ridges requires concentration and rigor. They did very well and should think about having fun. The first times are a bit stressful but with experience, it becomes a pleasure to lead and make the tracks.
They did it safely and with a lot of desire. Ameen also drove very well.

Thanks Kevan for your support at the back.
Thanks Thomas.

See you soon on the sand

Thanks JB for sharing the convoy with me. After trip & safety briefing I immediately sub-contracted the lead to James for the first two hours and then to Maher for the remaining 90 minutes.

Convoy
***** Mytommi
*** jamestaylor
*** suryasingh
*** Bashart
*** varriernanda
**** Mhamidi001

We went to the East of the gatch road too, warming up with some mild crests and in some technical terrain before practicing cresting of higher dunes one by one. All drivers did very well even if it was only the second respectively third advance trip for Nanda, Surya and Bashar.

However, just before the planned handover of the lead to Maher we experienced a double stuck when switching a crest. One car got stuck on the crest and the following car when turning down got stuck in an somewhat unfortunate position. We had to perform an advanced recovery that included the use of a winch. After some time, with excellent teamwork, both cars were safely recovered and we could continue.

After playing on the East side for a while, Maher took us to the other side of the gatch were we enjoyed half an hour of a very nice and flowy drive before we went back to the gatch road and from there to the exit point.

Both James and Maher did and excellent job of leading the convoy and finding fine tracks. The only area that probably needs a bit of improvement is navigating waypoints. But skill comes with practice…

I would like to thank in particular Maher and James for part-leading and sweeping and Surya for an excellent second lead.
Thanks all for joining and supporting and see you soon again in the sand.

Thomas
