You lead and Sweep, I watch

Post by JustAhmedo »

We met at the deflation point early and ready, all GPS points were saved by the members the night before.

Each driver had 40 mintues to lead, the sweep and second lead.

The order:
Timothy: starting point to point 1
Dan: point 1 to point 2
Shiroy: point 2 to point 3
Faisal: point 3 to inflation point.

Although the options to lead advance, intermediate or newbie track was available, all members decided to lead an advance track which I was really happy with their choice as this is the level they will lead in expert level.
All four drivers showed experience gained from previous trips and they applied it at leading/sweeping.
I was an advance driver in the trip, therefore all members gave detailed briefing for an advance trip and each member gave an excellent briefing. Convoy order was formed and roles were changed between to give everyone a chance to lead/sweep/2nd lead equally with me being in the middle all the time.

I was really impressed and proud by the choice of the track of each and every driver.
Everyone had their unique style while taking us to the point and I haven’t seen any struggling or nervousness while choosing the track. Just all enjoying the lead, switching, shaving the crests and going with the flow. All drivers were communicating excellently while facing any ditches or steep down slopes.

Thanks to all members for the lovely day and excellent choice of track. I enjoyed my afternoon with 4 different fantastic style of lead. Hope to see you all leading for AD4x4

Now each member will post their trip report below.

Thanks Ahmed for organizing the trip and providing us this wonderful learning opportunity.

After Ahmed briefed us I volunteered to take the first lead. Convoy order was,
Tim lead
Dan 2nd lead advanced
Ahmed acting advanced
Faisal advanced
Roy sweeper advanced
I gave the safety briefing for the advanced drive, gave the radio frequency and convoy order and we set off.
After lining up and a radio check we started out slowly warming up. A few minutes into the drive I led the convoy into a small bowl. We took a few minutes for three of us to get out of the bowl and get convoy back in line. Valuable communication lesson learned. I should have stopped the convoy sooner.
On our way again and warmed up we starting side cresting and enjoying the small dunes. We reached the way point in 20 minutes and took a small break. We continued to play around the area for the next 20 minutes with a few second trys and one stuck (me). I handed off the lead to Dan. Everyone did great Dan and Roy did great at 2nd lead and sweeping. Thanks to everyone for your support.
See you again soon in the sand.

Thank you Ahmed for this learning opportunity, it was really nice and we all enjoyed it! We all had the chance to lead, to second and to sweep our convoy.

I followed Tim to lead the convoy from point 1 to the 2nd one (waypoints has been given one day before trip).
After briefing about the safety rules and confirming the radio frequency, the convoy order was:
Dan - lead advanced
Tim- 2nd lead advanced
Ahmed - Marshall acting as an advanced driver
Roy - advanced
Faisal- sweeper advanced

We enjoyed side crestings (small and medium dunes), switch crestings and slide slopes. One stuck on the top of one crest from my side was successfully recovered by Tim without any issues.
We also learnt to communicate better and more frequently in order to keep our convoy safe. We enjoyed 40 min drive without other issues.

Thank you all for the nice driving experience
See you in the sand
Dan

After Dan's Drive it was my turn to lead. Safety briefing was carried out, and clarified all queries prior to starting the drive. All drivers were advanced drivers and the track level chosen was an advance drive as well. The Convoy order was as follows:
Roy - Lead
Faisal - Second Lead
Ahmed - Marshal
Dan - Advanced
Tim - Sweeper

We started from the pre allocated waypoint # 3 near the gatch road and proceeded in the direction towards Waypoint #4 which was situated very close to Nagrah Dune. Dunes were relatively small to medium sized and was great for cresting. We zig-zagged our way through the dunes with side cresting and side sloping. There was one one recovery that was needed for Ahmed as he got his belly wedged in the top of a dune. Recovery was done safely and swiftly by Tim.

Thereafter we were back on our way and drove till the destination waypoint. We reached waypoint # 4 in time. It was a fun drive. All drivers did a really good job. The lead was then handed over to Faisal.

Thank you Faisal for doing a great job as second lead. Thank you Tim for the awesome sweeping with regular updates. Thank you Ahmed for organising this drive and giving us this opportunity.

Look forward to seeing you all in the sand. Until next time, Adios !
