Explore Razeen

Post by Octopus »

Drivers:
Zak - Fortuner (Lead)
Rob - Chevy (2nd Lead)
Florian - Pajero (and part lead)
Reji - (Sweeper)

The wind was blowing quite strong as we deflated which gave us an indication of what we were going to face in the dunes. After a briefing about what we had planned for the day we set off into the dunes to play and explore. Razeen is a challenging area very similar to Butais and Wagan with its own details, The high dunes are very technical on top and this made it a difficult place to lead. Lots of surprises (most of the crests end in a ditch and there are patches of very soft sand everywhere.
That being said we had a great time cruising the dunes and testing ourselves with lots of cresting and technical climbs to the top. Because of the wind the crests were very sharp and whenever we had a stuck the sand was really blasting us. All of us were covered in sand after the first recovery. But moods where high and we continued.
Around 9am I handed the lead over to Florian and he took us deeper into the dunes as we scoped out more of the beautiful area. Being the lead however means driving into the unknown and after a small side slope Florian came down into a bowl at the wrong angle and not enough momentum to get him out without getting stuck. Since it was a small bowl it was also difficult for us to recover him as snatching a car up a slope risks getting the 2nd car stuck in the bowl without room to maneuver. After many attempts and max tracks we were able to snatch him by linking 3 ropes together and Reji to pull him from some hard sand.
Once we were all out it was getting hot and we made a push for the sabkha and from there to the tarmac.

Thanks guys for joining. Reji you did fantastic and should start looking for your upgrade to Expert. Florian im always amazed how well you drive the big Pajero, and Rob as always your attitude chills out the rest of the team and that is invaluable.

Until the next one.

Zak

I sometimes struggle getting up before dawn in the working week but come the weekend drive, I don’t seem to need an alarm clock.

Thanks Zak for arranging and leading the start of the drive, great area to explore and tight and technical in places. Well done Florian for taking the helm for the second part, nice work. Reji, solid drive. A small convoy but good spirits by all in dealing with the few recoveries along the way.

Look forward to catching up on future drives. Thanks guys!
Rob.
