This was an exploratory trip to one of the dune ridges North of Al Quaa road, none of us has visited before.
We met at Wagan petrol station and at 11:00h with half an hour delay made our way to the deflation point at the Alrgiat camel race track.
After deflation and trip briefing we started our journey into the desert at 11:45h.
The area was marked by medium and high dunes, sometimes irregularly shaped and often small bushes in the dune valleys and bowls. And soft to very soft sand in places. In any case slightly different to the dunes we normally drive in.
After a warm-up where most struggeled a little with finding the right momentum for the situation we had a first break and Michael provided some valuable feedback and suggestions for how to drive.
We continued our way with quite a number of stucks and second tries until we eventually reached Pajero Bowl at about 15:00 h. We had a lunch break and practised bowling from left and right. Pajero bowl is a nice one, not very difficult but fun to drive.
We continued our way towards West when after a few km we hit a fence with signs “keep away”. We first tried our luck Southwards but couldn’t see and end of the fence. We the turned North as we eventually had to go there anyway. We drove more then 10 km along the fence before we could turn to the West. I later found out on a map (not Google maps where you cannot see it) that this fence is enclosing an area of more then 300 skm.
In order to reach the exit point in daylight we left the dune ridge and drove the last 17 km in the Sabkha. We reached Umm al Oush road at 18:00 h where two drivers decided to take leave and head home. The rest of the convoy continued to the West watching a beautiful sunset and arrive through a mix of dunes and Sabkha Razeen road at 19:00 h after a total of 125 km in the desert. The last few km turned into an impromptu night drive which added a lot to the fun.
Thank you all for joining this exploratory trip, I hope you enjoyed it and had a good learning. Special thanks to John and Michael for support and valuable advice.
See you all,
Thomas
