update :

what you already know: on the way to the office yesterday my coolant was splashing all over the engine bay.

after work I removed the steamport/TB heater hose ... and yes IT WAS EXREMELY rubbed by the waterpump pulley and punctured.
cut the punctured part off and tried to route from above the air intake tube ... too short. :x

so ... at 16:30 a emergency call to a very dear and very close friend and brother who recently got a new job as workshop manager at a well known premium car show room here in AD.

30 minutes later I was holding a 50cm high pressure ASE100 1/4" hose in my hands

10 minutes later I had the hose cut to lenght, mounted correctly, coolant refilled (I had lost HALF a radiator coolant without over heating  goooood )

one small hickup in town ... would have screwed a desert trip for sure 8-)

back home ... and from Thursday morning till now I have made 150kms ... and still half a tank full ... seems like mpg is 50% better than with the 4.0 I6L

A/C:
is getting installed by Princess cars
Took them 2 days to get all the small fittings and dryer/mounting options and the piping figured out.
Now they supposed to have all prepared and wiring started to have all controlled as if it was a Jeep A/C

Backup Light/Park Neutral/Gear shift indicator sensor/decoder:
theoretically all figured out ... but waiting for the A/C to finish to pour the info to the poor workshop guys.
THEN registration renewal ... next week?

Drivetrain and more upgrades: (   )

Bilstein 5160 remote reservoir shocks for TJ 3" lift supposedly on the way :? (after 3!!! months back order) BUT

complete set of 8 currie adjustable Johnny Joint control arms plus
Anti-Rock torsion anti sway bar plus
currie JJ front axle upper housing kit plus
currie JJ front and JJ rear ajustable track bars plus
limiting straps plus
LED tail lights plus
LED flasher relay plus
black low restriction 3D mesh grille insert
all picked up from brown UPS santa today

With my ready waiting Superior Super Truss for the rear D44 and
my bolt on T&T rear upper spring plate relocators (here as well) and
my planned prothane coil spring inserts stage 2 reengineered and Mussaffah fabbed

I think not much more doable (bolt on, muroor street legal!) anymore  All compromises eliminated
(except ... it still is no King shocks, no Dana 60's, no "eat my shift" race transmission :x  )

I was supposed to take it to the registration last week. But the Pickup driver drove it into a steel beam causing damage to the windshield and A frame...

This will take few weeks to fix , and then I'm finalizing the overheating issue. Other than that the Truck is pretty much ready. :)

hope to see you and your toy soon back in the sand and fine, my friend!
My time table was not completely as I wished it to be, too... But the results so far are promising

When will you take it to the registration ?
Are there any more technical problems left on your rig ?

1. registration after installing the Park/Neutral/Reverse sensor and cabling all needed signals ... a fail for "no backup lights" is not acceptable
2. technical problems? none ... important unfinished things : only A/C and above mentioned sensor, a matter of day(s). ... not so important "upgrades" : control arms, anti rock, new track bars, new shocks etc ... slowly and after renewal

Good News:
A/C control of the Sanden FLX7 now completely transparent through the dash controls ... as if it is a OE Jeep A/C. Custom piping, Audi dryer, BUT icecold (yeah no pressure switches...) so the guys who did it are recommending a in cab electronic thermostat which would cycle the A/C according to actual interior temps.
Icing the lines is quite unlikely here in the desert 8-)

I cannot give accurate fuel mileage yet ... still not driven regularly.

all I can say: with the 4.0 I6L I could only do 200 kms before my light went on in the dashboard.
Last time I did 160 kms with the LS1 in mixed city driving and the gauge was just below half ... looks like a 50% increase to my old setup :D

power steering pump return line was seeping because of too large diameter hose and the hack job of a hose clamp barb setup :dash1:
(too many shortcuts taken by the shop .... grrrrrr)

another nice thing ... 20 kms mixed city and urban driving in the middle of a warm day with AC on and my coolant temps NEVER got above 200* F

But in the same occasion I was monitoring open/closed loop ... and my PCM never got out of open loop ... WTF!?
(no codes triggered!)

need to dig some more ... temp above 160*F should switch to closed loop ... except when the upstream O2s are defective? ... I need to check my tune as well! Eventually the PO of the caprice did not have a stock tune in the PCM after all? (too many DTC codes were disabled already and make me suspicious now  )

other than that ... here my other observations:
- with 4.88 and 33" tires and a tire size gear ratio adaptation via HPTuner I have a interesting shifting behavior :
1st gear stays engaged until 2000rpm ... which might be nice sometimes ... but on the other hand the shift into 2nd comes surprisingly when turning into a corner and is still abrupt somehow... quite confusing
- shifting behavior and torque management work much better if I have the courage to step a bit more on the throttle :D
- there is a surge with part throttle for a second or two after shifting into next gear SOMETIMES ... but goes away impressively mighty when pushing the pedal slightly.
- acceleration is amazing ... with no effort and no time sluggy is at max city speed of 80km/h
- from 80 km/h I am in 4th (OD) with 1500 rpms ... if I accelerate I simply see the speedo needle climb ... moments later I am running 120km/h at 2600rpms :p ... like sitting on a bungee rope driven sleigh :D (superior to any I6 4.0 I could drive before ... just mighty truck like)

I am REALLY glad I did the Vanco Big Brake conversion just before the swap !!!

All in all : wow ... still have no guts to press the skinny pedal hard ... now really curious about off road behavior ... eventually need to tamper a bit with torque management and shift points

Everything sounds promising .. :)

The biggest moment is passing inspection I guess ..

Update :

inspection ................................ is still pending

reason:
Sluggy is not completely ready yet ...
It IS PROMISING AND BAD KICK AXX ... but :
A low mileage (75ooo km) 11 year old engine has some quirks as well!
Especially if the previous owner was not driving the car properly ... short trips ... oil changes every 10000 kms means more than a year in the engine :? ... and because the car is not really moved previous owner of course uses water instead of antifreeze

so what happens is that piston rings get baked/glued to the pistons ... as long as you do not rev high all is ok ... but once you push it a bit one or more rings get damaged ... result :
PANIC ATTACK because sluggy was suddenly smoking badly... one cylinder turns out to have bad compression.
Undressing the engine shows baked piston rings and lots of residue. The typical shorttrip never change oil water coolant engine.
So at the moment Dr. Hisham is doing a "tune up" (cleaning, reringing, new baerings, valve job, new valve stem seals, new Corvette valve springs, new oil pump and of course all new gaskets).

sounds familiar to me ...
hope its doing fine again, soon ...

Not good, and sorry to hear this....they certainly don't care about maintenance is this country...cars are disposable here...

Hope it will be running soon...
