Hi Experts,

I need some information and thoughts from experts here on buying 3.8 V6 SWB 2006 Pajero. Primary motivation is to have it for some short daily drives and fun drives over the weekend.

Your suggestions are valued and appreciative.

Hi, 2006 is a bit of an old model,if you get it, you have to ensure the car is in good condition before going to the desert, you have to check engine, suspension, and cooling system. Good luck in your search

Thanks, i am thinking of getting detailed checkup but i am more worried about the performance of this car since i dont have previous experience with pajero but i heard they are good for use and abuse. Is that correct and also performance is good?

I'm no car expert, but I did have the 3.5L LWB - I've since swapped it for an FJ.

3.8 Pajero engine is 247 bhp and max torque 329 nm.
For comparison the 1GR-FE 4.0 Dual VVT-i Toyota engine (FJ, Fortuner, Prado) is 270 bhp and 377 nm.
3.6L pentastar in the Wranglers are 285 bhp and 353 nm.
So power wise they are quite decent, only slightly behind FJ/Wrangler. This is just "on paper", I have never driven a 3.8l Pajero offroad.

I liked the automatic transmission in my Pajero, actually prefer it over the one in FJ because it gave me more control over which gear I was in. In the FJ you can't upshift, you can only limit how high the AT will shift up, and the FJ transmission is also more quick to downshift on it's own. In the Pajero you can manually change gears within reason (if the shift would not result in stalling the engine). I've mostly gotten used to the FJ transmission, but every now and then I find myself in a situation where I miss being able to upshift or avoid an automatic downshift.

Pajero's are old-school / simple cars, pretty reliable. Spare parts not too expensive, but not as cheap as e.g. Toyota.
AC in the Pajero is OK, but Toyota has better AC. Not really something you notice unless you are idling and it's very hot, in which case you can notice the Pajero AC isn't blowing as cold as it would be if you were driving on the highway.

Really appreciate for your detailed and informative reply. I have also heard some good reviews of Pajero and that is what made me think of getting SWB car since as i cannot afford Nissan Safari SWB :) only other decent option looks like pajero. Just one thing please how much difference would it make if i go for 3.5L or 3.8L and are there any major technology differences in both variants.

For spare parts, you mentioned they are not cheaper than Toyota. I own one Toyota and dont find spare parts to be cheaper for it :)
Does that mean i keep in mind that Pajero spare parts will cost more than Toyota Land Cruiser?

3.5L is significantly less powerfuL. It is still a capable offroader with SWB, but definitely go for 3.8.

Comparing land cruiser spare parts to pajero is not an apples to apples comparison. Land cruiser is a much bigger and more expensive vehicle. I may be wrong about the spare parts prices being higher for Mitsubishi than equivalent Toyota vehicles, this is just what I have heard/read, I have not done my own comparison and perhaps that statement does not apply in the UAE.
