Looking for a New Offroad Car
Good morning AD4x4,
I am looking at leasing a new offroad vehicle as my current lease is up in a month. Currently I have a 2014 Nissan Xterra, and other than a few issues (very soft suspension and slightly lower ground clearance than id like) I have not real complaints, the car has great power and a fairly good 4x4 system. However, Nissan has discontinued the Xterra in 2016 and I am left having to pick a new vehicle. Here are some immediate option, your comments on the below would be greatly appreciated:
Mitsubishi Pajero LWB GLS (3.5l) 2016
Toyota Fortuner GXR 4.0l 2016
Toyota Prado EXR 2.7l 2016
Ford F150 4x4
Chevrolet Silverado Z71
Your offroading thoughts on the above would be awesome!!
Thanks in advance AD4x4!
Jake

Hi,
I would say why do you want to change your car since all ok but the suspension?
What about the option of changing the suspension to a brand which is adjustable (hard on sand & you can change it to soft for on road driving) & keep your car
If still want to go for something else, then I would choose the Fortuner.
Prado V4 engine will not entertain you in terms of power.
Mitsubishi is good but to a certain level (if you are planning to reach advanced level & above, then it is not the best choice).
Note: this is my personal opinion

Re: Looking for a New Offroad Car
agree with saif, if keeping the xterra is an available option, you can get a top range suspension and still cheaper than getting new car and then probably still need new suspension;
if new car is desired - from the list -, I would go for the Fortuner (basically it is a Hilux truck platform) as tough as it can get.
if a VEHICLE is desired, then it is a Chevy ; Ford has some nice ones also

Re: Looking for a New Offroad Car
Fortuner is a great choice. I believe that some models have the availability of locking rear differentials, might be useful to get if buying new.
Avoid the Prado with the 4 cylinder engine like the plague. It is way underpowered...I've been on intermediate trips with someone who had one and they really struggled with the lack of power (it is a heavy vehicle for that small an engine - same platform as an FJ, but ALL FJs come with the 4.0 V6)

Have you considered an FJ, JK (Rubicon) or Landcruiser Xtreme? Not exactly sure of your price point, but I think an F150 would be more expensive than the FJ and JK. The FJ and JK are very popular in the club and both are very capable. The stock Landcruiser is also excellent off-road (and I am waiting for Iqsaan to let me know what the Xtreme version is like, but I would think awesome!)

Dear Jake,
Whatever you buy, please buy a LWB.
There are too many Jeepers around at AD4x4 and the LWB owners feel a bit lonely !

Re: Looking for a New Offroad Car
Thanks Team!
Unfortunately my current Xterra is only on a 2 years lease so I am not getting rid of it because of the suspension issues, it sadly is just time for us to part ways..... You guys have given me a lot to think about. I may come back with a few further questions.
Thanks again AD4x4

Usually with a lease you have an option to purchase the car at the end unless it is pure rental.Panzer4x4 wrote:Thanks Team!

Re: Looking for a New Offroad Car
Thanks again Team,
You have all given me a lot to think about.
I have since gone back to the leasing companies and got a few more options. it is now narrowed down to the Xterra Offroad and the VXR FJ Cruiser. I am tending to lean towards the FJ as the offroad capabilities are much better than the Xterra. I have been happy with my X for the last 2 years and it has served me well as a daily driver and offroad vehicle, but sadly it is taking a second place seat to the FJ.
Now I will need to pick the brains of the FJ Community to figure out the tips and trick to driving these beasts offroad.
Thanks again everyone for the info/ help/ comments, I am just glad I found a suitable alternative to a Jeep
