I have had a bit of a struggle with this one recently and still haven't found a solution.

I have a route and would like to convert it to the series of waypoints. Any advice?

Not tried this specifically but it will be something along the lines of:

get the route in a gpx format (Google can do this for you)

Then use a POI loader to convert to csv

I think this will give you all the details of the route, i.e all the waypoints.

You can the edit this and load the waypoints back

Alternatively you maybe able to double click the route and to show the points in base camp. I cannot remember if this table shows you lat/long but if it does you should be able to copy out of the table, or split the route into smaller routes and then use the sub route as the next route to navigate to.

For tracks in basecamp you can double click on a recorded track to bring up a table showing summary with coordinates for each point along the route (select a row to highlight the point on the map) - then either copy and paste or manually note the coordinates of the point you want to create as a way point.

Maybe there's a similar process for working with routes?

I was hoping it will as simple as it would be creating a route from waypoints.
For example:
You can create a route using waypoints in the Library and Devices area.
Click a waypoint in the Library and Devices area. To select multiple items, hold Ctrl on your keyboard, and click the items.
Click File > New > Route using Selected Waypoints.

The above process is simple and should not take more than 10 to 20 seconds.

The issue is I want to extract several points from a route and was hoping there is a script or tool out there already.

Not that I am aware of. The workflow always assumes that you have the waypoints to create the route so why would you need to do the reverse. Because of this I think making a gpx and using the poiloader is the only way to have something that might work. In terms of time if it works you are looking more like 10-15 minutes, that's assuming you know what to do.

Following some further search term combinations on Google, I think I may have just stumbled across something....


GPS Utility ( http://www.gpsu.co.uk/functions.html ) list the following as one of the functions.
Create Waypoints and Routes from Track information

I could convert my route to a track and then create waypoints. WIll update you on the outcome.

Can you post instructions please as I have searched and tried the help menus. Basecamp's help menu only provides instruction for Route from a Waypoint. Not the other way around.

i will dig it out,
once i was editing (or messing around) with my stored items
on basecamp and one of my tracks became a series of blue flags.
i will try to mess around again hopefully i can recall the way

I am sure this cannot be done within BaseCamp.

This is my suggestion.

1/ Export Route (or track) to a gpx file
2/ Start RouteConverter and drag file into right hand pane.
3/ Waypoints are displayed and shown on map in left hand pane.
4/ Manipulate list (delete undesired waypoints in Thom's case)
5/ Export to gpx file
6/ Import into BaseCamp

It was very quick - it took me 1m15s to export, edit, re-import and view in BaseCamp.

RouteCoverter is available here http://www.routeconverter.com/home/en it needs Java 7 or above.

I downloaded the Mac version and followed the steps. I managed to get halfway through step 4, successfully deleting some of the points, but there does appear to be a Java issue which I will try and sort out before giving up and trying the Windows version.
