Hello All,

I would like to have opinion from anybody who is using FJ 2015 model delivered navigation system before I buy other navigation system. If anybody using could you please let me know, is it reliable and server the purpose of off-road GPS?

It works perfectly for on road and I saw the setting for off-road mode but not able to check how it will work for off-road as I don't know how typical off-road GPS works and what information it will provide while driving in the desert for comparison. If anybody played with both the models, your inputs are welcome in-order to decide in built model sufficient or do I need to buy new one.

Also I am not sure this in-built is sufficient to sign off Intermediate level of equipment.

Thanks
Sridhar

The most important aspects of the off-road GPS is the ability
To pinpoint any location and save it, rename it, such for it later.
Also the ability to draw and save the route you're driving it and rename it, the most important issue is the ability to be connected
To a computer for updates of software and maps as well modifying the above through 3rd party software e.g Basecamp
Furthermore the aftermarket GPS is portable
Some aftermarket GPS can accommodate Google earth pictures
E.g Montana

I doubt there is a built in GPS who can do all this

As for intermediate level the only thing the build in GPS can provide
Is you location and the 4 poles. When you zoom out you will see
the mail roads around you so you'll have an approximate
idea about where you are and you direction

To make long story short, you can use yyour built in GPS for indication only in newbie and intermediate level but you have to
Get yourself a real GPS at the advanced level

I have the 2015 FJ nav, and while I have issues with it (the antenna placement means my GPS signal in the city is terrible), the off-road capabilities meet much of what Scorpio says you need. It CAN download updates and map updates via memory cards. It does let you store routes and waypoints. And a bunch more. I have NOT played with all of it, but as you may know, the FJ's entertainment unit is basically a Windows computer, running a stand-alone GPS navigation program. As such it is more powerful than most in-car GPS systems. One thing I am doubtful it can do is interface to Basecamp however, but not sure how much of a showstopper that is yet. Most of my GPS work has been done at sea, so never used Basecamp.

The manual for the unit is separate from the main car manuals, and very, very dense. I have managed to work my way through some of it, but not all of it. To use the GPS off-road appropriately, you will need to do this. Of course, I am not sure a hand-held GPS is any easier. I suggest we try to figure this out together.

one more important thing

you have to check the the coordinates formats that your GPS can provide
i had a pathfinder and the GPS works on only a single format which is not the
commonly used in the club (which provide the most accuracy)

Thanks Scorpio and futureshock999 for your valuable information.

It does have many of the capabilities what you mentioned, It can support multiple formats of co-ordinates. As you said I will play with it more in intermediate level.

futureshock999 I see the signal issue during initial catch up for few seconds later it works well.

Thanks

You are welcome.

For me, I can drive all the way from Dubai Marina to the Dubai airport, and STILL not get a signal. This has happened on several occasions, and other trips of similar length. This is not acceptable, nor fit for purpose. I have my 10k due, so I will have them check the antenna hook up - I suspect it may be a bad connection.

Thats really not the case with my GPS, As you said it may be due to antenna hook up... may be we also need to check for map updates, even I have 10K due next month..
