Just past the Fish Souk - all the way down towards the end of the quay. It is on the right as you need to take a corner.

Hi folks,

Saw another thread that suggested buying a flag pole (fishing rod) from Mina. Is it fair to assume I can find a suitable shop near the Fish Souk? Will look at GPS units whilst I'm there too (thanks to CarbonHunter for kindly posting the coordinates for AMIT).

If you can't find a flag pole (aka fishing rod ) in the souq, try Carrefour - that's where I got mine from

Your next step will be figuring out how to attach it ....

Was considering getting one of those suction glass carrier thingys to attach the pole to a window, but I was wondering if a long flag pole would have too much leverage and pop the window out of its seal. Has anyone heard of any issues there?

Hi Mulgara,

I've been using that for a couple of years now with no complaints with a 2 meters pole, i decided latelty to get a 4 meters one, don't think it would hold, depends on the sixe and weight of the pole itself...

easy question for me, as i'm working in construction industry:

Succion handle can take over 80kg. There is no way you break or unseal your windows though. Except if you really insist to suck with both (you windows are curves, the succion is for flat). But, most probably, the succion handle will pop out first.

Where to find? when you go to mussafah, and arriving in the main street, with ARB on your left hand side, you will find a lot of construction materiel shops on the right hand side before the first traffic light... A basic handle cost 60dhs.

To fix the rod on it, i recommand to go to ACE, and buy hose collars. Very efficient, and adjustable (small size = 6dhs/2pcs).

but basically, everybody founds his own inspiration on this topic!

Thanks for the tips above guys. I now have my flag, pole and attachments and thought other Newbies might find a step by step guide helpful, as follows:

1. Buy two single glass carriers / holders / lifters - I found mine at one of the larger hardware stores on Najda / 6th St towards the 9th St end for AED 35 each. You might need to ask around though as stock varies. I think two singles are better than the doubles or triples that appear more commonly available as, being separate, they can be attached further apart, thereby giving additional leverage to support a longer pole.

2. Buy a fishing rod - I got the longest one I could find in Carrefor, but I made sure it was extendable so it will fit in the Jeep when collapsed.

3. Buy some large hose clamps to attach the pole to the glass carriers - I used two per carrier, but the second one is now for back-up only after I found out (the hard way) that properly tightening the second one pulls the two carriers in to line, which doesn't work well on curved glass (one popped off before I loosened the two outer clamps). It's probably best to attach the pole and clamps with the glass carriers in place on your car window, so the angles are right.

And that should be it! Pictures below show the results.

It's not as neat as getting a nice bracket made, like Adiga has, but it will do the job nicely for now.
