Chevrolet Avalanche Tyres for 20" rims

Hello everybody,

I have a friend who has a Chevrolet avalanche with 20" rims and he's thinking of upgrading the tyres with one's that will be better for off-road driving.

The current tyres that are installed are 285'50'20"

Any recommendations of a better size for Offroading (to be able to drive in the sand when deflated) and brands?

He lives on the western region "Ruwais" thus the tyres should also be suitable for long distance travel (not too noisy on the road) since we drives 400 Km from Ruwais to Dubai every week or two.

I'm sure the members here with F150s can offer good advice but I know it's quite common to switch to 17" rims for off road ability and wider choice of available tyres.

Pirelli scorpions seem a popular choice and available for bigger rim sizes.

I second Ray's opinion. Go for a second set of wheels and tires for off-roading for better floatation. Just make sure the wheels clear the brake calipers

Before choosing, do your homework on the factory size to know what diameter you need to achieve ( going away from factory size will open many doors of performance and mechanical issues, most of which can not be closed ) I think factory size is 265 65 17 so you can go for 265 70 16 and they will look better but you should check.

For off-road, 17" rims are good and believed to hold the tire better, on the other hand, a 16" will give you more rubber on the side wall and I believe more footprint when deflated.

For tire selection, I'm running cooper at3, the are rated something like 70% on road / sand and 30% off-road and mud, my experience: excellent grip even with water (as advertised) very tough and I love them.
Many other brands are available with similar features.
My advice, if not for looks. Don't go for the ones that are. Off-road / mud rated, they are not suitable for the sand. And with the weight of your vehicle they will dig like there is no tomorrow. They look nice though.

Thanks for all the replies and advises, I guess we'll stick to the 17" for Offroading and we'll see in the future maybe we'll go for a lift kit and spacers + bigger tyres.

Thanks again
