Hi Dre,
if you want and simple and robust solution, strap some HDPE pipe to the spare tyre, with a stopper in the bottom, then slot the flag in. Much more discrete and a load stronger than any mount on the roof rail.
I'll have a look for some pictures when I get home. We used this solution on both out LWB and SWB Pajeros.
Similar pipe arrangement to what Thom has on the Rhino (if he still uses it), though mounted in a different location.
good luck, Nigel

Dre, I do have a picture that may help, but unable to upload attachments to the site at the present, as some "quota" has been reached.
If you would like to PM your email address to me, I can send you the pic separately.
cheers,
Nigel

this will only be an option if you have a Pajero with a cloth spare tyre cover, and not one of the new-fangled plastic jobbies.
I'm afraid that I don't have a closeup of the actual installation, but I used a length of 12mm HDPE pipe, that the ARB flag pole fitted into perfectly.
Expansion bolt in the bottom, to plug the hole.
Two short fabric straps to hold the pipe onto the spare tyre.

Rock solid solution; totally hidden; 0.5 seconds to install flag at start of trip! :D

Zoom in on the picture, and you can make out the outline of the pipe under the tyre cover.
