Cooling Issues

Post by cheshiretvr »

Hi

Jeep tj 2005.

When in the desert with AC on the Engine temp starts creeping, turn AC off and temp goes back to normal. Does not do this on the raod only seem to do it when under load. Any thoughts on where to start and what upgrades to the Jeep could solve this.

Thanks

Andrew

Older jeeps cooling systems don't seem to cope well with summer desert at all - extra fan can help as Khaled said, bigger radiator, don't use AC, fit bonnet vents, switch off engine and/or open bonnet at stops to let heat escape, keep moving!

Don't get stuck :) sitting jeeps on a pile of sand with no air underneath the engine while trying to maneuver out in 4LO doesn't help... on that note drive in 4HI whenever practical.

Well said,,,,
additional options; additional fans ( not fan only) ;-)
Additional radiator for the gearbox oil

fan clutch is getting weaker?
fan shroud removed or broken?

you will notice that specially at low speeds where not enough air is pushed by the Jeep moving ...

Check the tension in the drivebelt. If you can twist it more than 90 degrees at the midpoint of its longest free length, or if it has more than a 1/2" of deflection, you'll need to tighten the belt up. The extra load of the AC compressor could be enough to cause a slightly loose belt to slip on the water pump pulley and reduce coolant circulation through the radiator.
A weakening fan clutch or broken/missing fan shroud will cause cooling issues at idle/low speed all of the time regardless of whether you use the AC or not.
Also if the engine doesn't run hot on the highway when it's 40+*C outside, there's no problem with the radiator.

After installing a Flowkooler water pump on my 99 XJ, my jeep performs a lot better in summertime.
Of course, make sure to regularly check all components of the cooling system.

Be sure to check the electrical fan and the fan relay.
The electric fan should start immediately when you switch on the A/C.
