FJ Xtreme - Skid plate / bash guard

Dear All,

I have a 2015 FJ Xtreme and it has been recommended to me that I should fit a skid plate / bash guard for protection.

I have seen photos of the ones from Icon 4x4 and they are probably fine, but I would like to know if there are any other alternatives and what features should I be looking for.

I have been told that 8mm aluminium is the minimum thickness I should go for. Has anyone used the steel ARB ones? They are 3mm (but in steel).

Are there any features I should definitely avoid?

Very new to 4x4’ing and any and all help, opinions, recommendations are very welcome.

Hi Al , the 3mm ARB plate offers similar protection to your existing plate ... 8mm Aluminium offers the best compromise between weight and protection.

Hi Al , I also have an Extreme 2014 .... based on several recommendations, I have replaced the stock steel skid plate with a custom made 8mm aluminum one .... it is doing great in the desert specially with the advanced drives .... it costed me 1400 dhs in Best Line Garage in Dubai ...

Agree with Marshal Iqsaan and Monty, 8 mm icon plate is best they have offer me 1200 but couldn't get it yet was out of UAE next week planing to get. Omer is the sales I charge will discuss to get special price for 2

The others are offering 1600 with fixing so 1200 with fixing of the 8mm Al skid plate is by far the best offer i have seen. I will also recommend modified bump stops along with the FJ skid plate change.

Best to contact - TORC in Dubai or Best Line Garage.

Both can provide you with good services.

. How much is the extreme worth now did you get the navigation, crawl control and compressor and flags in the package?

Got mine from Artic Trucks since they did the rest of the work on the Xtreme. No issues or problem with it. Provide much more clearance than the stock one which does not offer any real protection. Cost was a bit more from memory at 1800 fully fitted. For cash I think you will get them down further now.

Also asking a silly question if you had an Xtreme with the upgraded suspension would they have not updated the bump stops? If not what would I need, I have the FJ Cruiser 2013 model.

Thanks everyone for the input (especially Iqsaan for telling me about this in the first place).

The Icon 4x4 skid plate is AED 1200 fitted (and powder coated black if you want it).

I also went to Arctic Trucks because they did the Xtreme mods and they have one that is a bit longer (going towards the front rather than the back) which they said is stronger as it covers more area and bolts on to more places. Theirs is 6mm aluminium for AED 1850. Based on Iqsaan’s advice, I asked for a quote for one in 8mm aluminium. They did not think it would cost much more. Either way, it is still quite a bit more expensive that the Icon one.

With regard to bump stops… I have no idea. The Xtreme comes with Fox stage one shocks (which I don't think I have bottomed out yet) and I am not sure if they run standard or modified bump stops. I expect standard as they would have made it a selling point.

I do not know of TORC or Best Line Garage. I will go and have a chat to them on Saturday.

The bump stops on the Fj are just like the skid plate. People using the FJ know how much they enjoy it, yet do not pay much attention to the bump stops. The ones supplied by best line are far tougher and yet flexible than than the one on the stock. I had the Futtaim mechanic appreciating theany times over knowing well what we do. A must for FJ. If you have the money, ask for the fox or icon or kings.
