Poll: How does your auto-transmission shift gears in manual

Post by mike »

A poll I intended to post for a while:

While in manual mode, does your auto-transmission
1/ keep the gear in the selected gear or
2/ shift automatically within the range between first gear and your selected gear

A/ allow you to shift down at higher RPMs or
B/ does not allow you to shift down at higher RPMs

Name your Model, year and option.

I'm starting: Nissan Patrol SWB 2013, 2 B.

Looking forward to your thoughts,
Mike

---

Why am I asking:
In 4L, with nice overlaps in RPM ranges, transmission seems to shift up and down very often - result is stress and overheated transmission.
In 4H, it's working perfectly fine shifting upwards while accelerating. Problem then is when momentum is fading and needs a boost with one gear down: it will usually stay locked.
Sometimes feels like I'm not getting the full control, which I was used to with a manual...

2014 Xterra

2 / b

it will only shift between 1st and the selected gear, but will hold it in gear if you try to down shift from say 3 down to 2 and it feels you it will be running at too high of RPMs in 2nd.

2B Fortuner 2014

Can be very annoying when it won't kick back when needing 1st to climb.

Hi mike,

With the patrol swb, it does lock 1st gear ? And that does the job on most climbs ?

Scotchyl, have you try Tunner?

Heard will fix the issue. Just shifted to automatic upset of clutch issues, will try new gear on this first trip this weekend

Yeah it's a coded programme in the epu so tuner won't stop it but always worth a try if we know someone who knows.

So what are we getting so far:

Seem happy:
1A - FJ 2008
1A - F150 FX4 2014
1B - Xterra

Seem not so happy:
2B - Patrol SWB 2013
2B - Xterra 2014 - no downshift if Xterra decides RPM too high for lower gear
2B - Fortuner 2014 - annoying when no down-shift when needed on climb
2B - JK Rubicon 2014 (with Pentaster) - and i HATE IT

Solutions:
1/ XX - WJ - Keep in D. That's interesting!! I'd like to learn from the master how to drive!!!
2/ Chiptune the Computer

Who's next?

Here's the deal:

Staying in 1st gear 4L/4H - no problem, it stays. But at some point you need to shift up... and possibly down again.

4L:
No issue for stop - steep climb - stop.
Continuous 4L doesn't sound too happy all the way through and apparently overheats the transmission after ~1-2 hours of driving.

4H:
No issue for "normal" driving.
Issue for situations like: climb - short plateau - climb where the momentum needs to be reduced for a few seconds, it's always a poker game for the second climb. Same for some big U's when the first incline doesn't allow steady continuous momentum when entering and you want to build momentum again once the front wheels are on the slope - too high RPM in first, too low in second gear.
Issue also for driving mistakes ;)

nononon, not keeping in D.

in 4H which i use 90% of the time, i'm shifting gears to get the proper range of power. I Only drive in D when i'm on newbie or intermediate convoy / quiet drive.

i go in 4L only in very soft sand and to self recover, and then, i keep it in D.
