I have tried Ubuntu 7.04 which is based on Linux.
It was ok. The new one Ubuntu 8.10 is even better.
Download for free at http://www.ubuntu.com/

Ubuntu is supposed to be a linux distribution to make the transition from Windows as easy as possible.
I suggest that you download a Live-CD (no installation) and try it. One of the challenges I have experienced with linux on a desktop PC is lack of support for various webcams and wireless network cards.
