Dave, had another thought while trying to sleep last night: might be worth double checking when the smoke is worst, as a valve stem seal would be a lot easier to fix. How bad is it when you pull the breather hose off (or filler cap)?

Nigel,

And I thought I was the only one that dreams of Frankenstein. I know a good phycologist.....

Smoke on deacceleration/idle is a sign of valve stem wear (caused by vacuum in induction track drawing oil in through the stem). I don't think it is exhibiting this tell tale. All the valve stem seals are in place.

Smoke on acceleration is ring wear - this is what you saw.

There is oil in the breather from the air box to the rocker cover - a sign of crankcase compression (also due to rings).

I can't find the rings locally (so far) so may take you up on your shipping offer.

I am hoping the work can be done with the engine in situ.

It looks like the GPS hunt is in doubt. :(
