Suggestions on Power Upgrades for VW Golf 1.6

Post by wasifahmed »

My wife drives a 08 Golf 1.6 auto, Since my FJ is in the garage I have been forced to use said Golf instead.

Have always found the acceleration sluggish, the only way to make it move at a reasonable clip is to use the sports mode and keep the pedal to the metal.

Any suggestions (reasonable!!) on how to get this car to performe better are sought. Is there a Turbo Kit availabel somewhere that can be ordered for this car or is it possible to install the GTI's turbo in this.

Not a lot you can do with it im afraid, Induction kit and remove the CAT by fitting a full sports exhaust will help a little (10-15 BHP more max).

Best option would be to fit either the 1.8 20v Turbo engine which has between 150BHP - 225BHP depending on what it came out of, or go for the 2.0 20v Turbo unit, however this would be expensive and not that easy to find.

Hope this helps a little

Thanks Andy.

Doesn't sound like a fun prospect to do. Any idea if the GTI turbo could be fitted to this car.

Also any idea where to locate a 2.0 or the 1.8 unit that you suggested.

What happens to cars that are declared a total loss by th einsurance, are these parted out ??

If you wanted to bolt a turbo to this engine then you would be better getting an aftermarket one rather than trying to fit one from the GTI turbo, it has a completetly different induction system and the cylinder head is also different.

Try these two sites and see if they can offer you anything;

http://www.turbo-kits.com/
http://www.turboneticsinc.com/

As for getting a complete engine, then I would have no idea to be honest. All damaged cars generally end up in either Sharjah or Mussafah so I would suggest looking there. There are VW breakers around so just go in and ask them.

If I was you, and I had the money I would import a mark 3-5 Golf VR6, these cars are stupidly quick off the mark and will outrun most cars when it comes to power/weight/handling ratio. One of the best hot hatches ever in my opinion.

The R32 that is available here would also be a scorcher but for the price and the fuel consumption.

I think what is possible for the 1.6 would be a CAI and a header exhaust.

The engine is kind of pre historic in terms of design going by the SOHC 8 valve design when their other engines like the 2.0 FSI are direct injection DOHC designs with the DSG gaerbox thrown in for fun.

Wish I gotten her a GTI instead of the 1.6 . Anyone wanna trade ?????

hello

in my opinion sel the car and buy a new 1 ready to go..

if u add a turbo kit on it 1st it wil void ur waranty 2nd u wil end up in mussafah every day due to overheating in summer even the gti's turbo causes it to over heat in summer...

my personal opinion buy a car that has engine muscle not a turbo... if ur looking for power luxury and comfort and reliabilty go for the g35 sedan it runs a 3.5L V6 307bhp 0-100kms in 6.1seconds...price range around 135-145k

hope this helps

Thanks for the great ideas and tips guys.

The new Golf is interesting though i would have prefered the 1.6 with the turbo not the 1.4

I'm gonna hang onto this car for a while more and meanwhile get a CAI and a header system for it. That should do the trick.

Actually its not that bad as I thought . Last week I was drivinf the AXA replacment Yaris and noticed that at 130 KMPL the Yaris is almost crying out whereas the VW will do it all smoothly with no drama at all. This makes you feel you are not going fast enough.

Now that is an idea. What do you propose, some kind of Unichip.

Who can do it and where.

Its OK about the warrenty, Can live without it. Car is well built no warrenty issues have ever come up.

i strongly recomend that u dont change the ecu...
1-it wil void ur warentee
2-in my experiance with german cars overheating is standared. (golf gti 2008)
3-its very hard to find a garage that can program an ecu here and if some thing goes wrong ur in trouble
4-it wont give u that much of a difrence if u dont throw in a cold air intake and headers with catback

this is just my point of view

Guys.

It never ceases to amaze me how knowledgeable our members are and their helping attitude towards others.

As KerMitt said then re chipping the ECU is out and so is the Turbo option as I have looked all over the web and nobody offers a Turbo for the 1.6 engine.

So what next. I think a CAI and Catback or if possible a full header system is the extent of mods possible on this particular car. What do you guys thing and any ideas on where to source these items.

Also what do you think of finding a crashed GTI or 2.0 and switching the complete engine and transmission. Is this possible under UAE laws. I guess the dash would also have to be switched so ideally a rear ended GTI or 2.0.

Where would I look apart from Mussafah for this kind of a requirment.

Also the car has developed a strange form of viberation when the car is accelerating between 70 and 90 KM. The body feels like it is shaking sideways. This clears up after 90KM and the car becomes rock solid. What could be causing this, tyre pressure, balancing, alignment or something else.
