As reported in our Salalah trip we encountered a serious problem in the Empty Quarter when Tonto, sliced open the inner sidewall on his LR tyre.
He had his LR serviced prior to the trip, including brakes, but obviously the wheel nuts had been fastened down too tight at the garage.
End result his wheel brace just could not remove the wheel nuts and in fact bent. We were now faced with a serious problem. 60kms back acroos the shale desert to the road. Fortunately after much trying I managed to plug the tear with several tyre repair plugs, enough to inflate the tyre and get us out to the road. We then had a 100km drive to the nearest big town where eventually a tyre repair guy had to ring around at 9.30pm at night to find a wrench big and strong enough to remove the wheel nuts and put the spare tyre on.
So moral of the story. This could happen to any of you at any time especially off road, so my advice is check your wheelnuts to see if the car wheel brace will actually work to loosen them.

Valid point Mac, something we take for granted that our spindly little wheel spanners made in the far East can loosen wheel nuts tightend with a pneumatic socket wrench whose torque setting has never been checked or calibrated.
The same can be asked if we have checked that our jacks are still effective on our raised suspension and body lifts?

Good that you guys managed to find a solution to get you out. I have had similar problems a couple of times in the past but never off road; as a consequence I carry a good quality breaker bar and socket in the car.
