Got the PM Xof, sorry I missed it. There's a bunch of icons behind the new messages link at the top of the page. Makes it a pain to see.

Dear Members,

We wish first to thank DoPushUps. We are gratefull for his proposal, we know he is the right person to do such a course, and we appreciate to have skilled and generous members in the club.

The Management of the club is assessing the best way for our members to enjoy navigation courses and to develop their skills of using GPS (both different but linked subjetcs). This will take a few weeks, so we are asking for some patience. meantime, join any trips, and your questions about the practical GPS use can be answered by our Marshals/explorers (if they have the anwer  )

Therefore, please stay tune for more as soon as the program is ready, people availables and members registered.

Now, to help DPU in setting the courses, if you are interested, please let us know where you would like it, for how long, etc...

keep in mind that we will try to satisfy as much as possible, but, it can't be "a la carte" courses.

Interested !
It has to be on weekends for me, Friday or Saturday flexible in time.
Any place in or around Abu Dhabi City is fine for me.

DPU (many many thanks !!!) appears to have the experience in teaching the matter, so I
think he should decide how much time is necessary and he is ready to spend himself.

I have read the GPS manual, I understand co-ordinates and co-ordinate systems to some
extent. I believe I understand all GPS receiver functions, and I practiced all of them by myself
except any of those for data exchange with a computer, loading of maps etc.
Practice is never enough of course, I am aware of that and know I can improve. Also sometimes
one finds out easier ways of doing something. I don't mind just refreshing or repeating.

A question on my mind: Could I generate own maps ?

I guess DoPushUps will appreciate if others interested will also give a brief background of
what they know and what they would like to know.

Fridays are good, as work alt sats

Cross-over use with maps would be good, following track and indication direction line ok....picking track in dunes ongoing but not to be addressed here as I see it...

Keen on seeing what works for most.....

Cheers

You can generate your own maps. You can print off any google earth, mapsource, msn map, etc. The only thing you need on it is a map scale and reference point. If the area is known to you, initial coordinates can be established from the reference point, north can be determined, and then coordinates for any other point on the map can be plotted directly from the map.
You can also purchase maps. Other than normal road maps, Explorer Off Road makes a book of UAE satellite maps. The scale is small (1:120,000.) but it will give you an overview of an area. 1:50,000 is considered the minimum detail for precision navigation. Military topographical maps will offer the most detail, but require some training to understand the contour lines. They are, however, restricted by the government here.
